My Personal Education Philosophy Statement
I believe that the primary purpose of education in America and in the 21st Century and beyond is to aid in the actualization of people towards becoming more engaged, informed, and equipped for the future that takes value in their intent and history. At its best, education supplements existing forms of knowledge to generate a more finessed ability to problem-seek and to problem-solve, and to assist in the actualization and learning of others. Schooling is an opportunity to discover new ideas and methods, and to collaborate on new visions for society, its structures, and its unforeseen challenges. Learning is indication of a healthy society and a healthy individual, and education’s charge is to develop these assets towards making belonging and justice available to all. With deference to these core principles, I believe that:
-
Education is a human right and is owed to anyone who seeks it.
-
Those who seek education already bring to it valuable ideas, experiences, skills, connections, and motivations.
-
Education ought to be intellectually-stimulating, culturally-resonant, rigorous, and joyful.
-
Education is informed by history, technology, culture, and science and substantially honors each appropriately.
-
Those who participate in education share in responsibility for its sustainability and its ability to evolve to meet new demands, needs, and challenges.
-
Education ought to reward both critical thinking and innovation.
-
Education ought to stoke advocacy, justice, equity, and agency.
